What affects the cost of a business website?

A page count tells only part of the pricing story.

The short answer

Website cost depends on the work required to produce and operate the agreed result. Content readiness, design complexity, integrations, migration and approval effort can matter as much as the number of pages. Compare proposals against the same scope.

Account for the work behind the pages

Ten pages with approved copy and a shared structure differ from ten bespoke experiences that need research, photography and detailed interaction design. Identify who supplies and approves each asset. Translation, product data cleanup and image permissions create real work even when they do not add visible navigation items. A useful quotation makes these assumptions explicit.

Describe functionality and migration precisely

A link to a booking provider differs from a custom availability integration. An enquiry catalogue differs from a transactional store. Existing URLs, downloads and enquiry routes also need deliberate treatment during a rebuild. Vague feature names make prices difficult to compare; describe what the visitor can do and what the business must receive.

Separate project price from ongoing duties

Domain renewal, content updates and connected services may continue after handover. Clarify ownership, included revisions and any ongoing support arrangement. For a BeyondPHP project, the scope and quotation are agreed before payment is requested through Stripe. A payment method does not determine the price, instalment schedule or contractual terms; those belong in the accepted proposal.

A practical next step

What to prepare.

  1. Comparable brief

Give each bidder the same pages, functions and migration requirements.

  2. Asset responsibility

State whether copy, images, translation and product data are supplied or commissioned.

  3. Ongoing costs

Ask for included revisions, service renewals and update responsibilities in writing.

Questions worth asking.

Can you give a price from the page count?

A page count helps estimate scale, but a responsible quote also needs content and functional requirements.

Does paying through Stripe create a subscription?

Only an explicitly agreed payment arrangement can define recurring charges. Do not assume a subscription from the payment provider alone.

Should we choose the cheapest proposal?

Compare completeness, ownership and operating responsibilities alongside price so the offers represent equivalent work.
